Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States

Organize to protect Western Pennsylvania's environment

If you're looking to make a meaningful, long-lasting impact on the environmental challenges facing the nation today, apply to be the PennEnvironment Western Pennsylvania Organizer. You can learn more here: www.pennenvironment.org/jobs.

You'll work to protect and preserve Pennsylvania's clean air, clean water and open spaces

From Pittsburgh's Three Rivers to Lake Erie, from Ohiopyle to the Allegheny National Forest, and all of the farms and open spaces in between, western Pennsylvania has its share of places we need to protect and preserve for years to come.

Yet western Pennsylvania's environment—as well as our environment across the state and nation—currently faces a variety of environmental challenges. Pennsylvania is at the center of a national debate about gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale, a practice that has serious implications for our waterways, open space and air quality. Our dependence on dirty coal makes Pennsylvania the third largest global warming polluting state in the nation, and is responsible for half of the state's residents living in communities where it's unsafe to breathe the air.

PennEnvironment's Western Pennsylvania Organizer will lead our efforts to win votes on our top priority campaigns and to work with our citizen members and activists to engage on these pressing environmental issues. Building off of PennEnvironment's network of tens-of-thousands of members and longstanding relationships in Harrisburg, you'll work with our expert staff to continue to build and mobilize powerful local constituencies to get behind your campaigns. You'll garner ongoing media attention to these important issues by organizing and speaking at news conferences, publishing op-eds, and meeting with reporters. You'll organize town hall meetings and rallies; lobby decision-makers; and run citizen outreach campaigns to educate the public, build membership and raise money for our work. You'll recruit interns, activists, and staff to work alongside you.

You'll work with one of the leading environmental groups in Pennsylvania

PennEnvironment is a statewide, citizen-based environmental advocacy group. Our professional staff combines citizen organizing with independent research, practical ideas and tough-minded advocacy to overcome the opposition of powerful special interests and win real results for Pennsylvania's environment. PennEnvironment draws on 30 years of success in tackling top environmental problems. We have led efforts to cut Pennsylvania's global warming pollution, minimize polluted runoff from developers, to improve the mileage of new cars and trucks, and much more. Learn more about the changes we've made at www.pennenvironment.org/results.

PennEnvironment is a part of the Environment America federation, a federation of 29 state-based environmental advocacy groups. Over the last decade, PennEnvironment staff have worked side-by-side with our most experienced advocates and organizers to make a real difference for the environment.

You'll get great training

You'll learn by participating in classroom-style trainings throughout the year. You'll also gain hands-on experience by working alongside some of the state and nation's top environmental advocates and organizers. With this combination of experiences, you'll have the skills and experience to take on even more leadership here at PennEnvironment or elsewhere in the Environment America federation or the broader environmental community.
