Make a Difference. Teach English in NYC

Posted by: NYC Teaching Fellows

Brooklyn, New York, United States

hp_firstgradeteacher_LYim.jpgThe NYC Teaching Fellows program recruits talented and dedicated individuals to raise student achievement in the New York City classrooms that need teachers the most.

A good teacher can mean the difference between a student graduating from high school or dropping out, between a college-bound student and one who does not apply. Yet, too often, the students with highest needs do not have enough good teachers. Become a NYC Teaching Fellow and help to change this reality.

Through this program, a Fellow can become a full-time teacher in a New York City public school within a few months of enrolling, teaching in subject areas that are traditionally hard to staff. No previous teaching experience or education coursework is necessary. Fellows enroll in an intensive pre-service summer training programand then earn a subsidized master's degreewhile teaching at a New York City public school.

This year, applicants who are interested in teaching English can do so by applying to take part in the Spring Classroom Apprenticeship. This is a ten-week extended training opportunity, where Fellows work full time alongside an experienced teacher during the regular school year.

Fellows participating in the Spring Classroom Apprenticeship will help staff the Bronx's highest-need middle schools with high-quality teachers. Through this experience, Fellows will gain greater familiarity with the needs of middle school learners, guided by outstanding mentor teachers. Ultimately, these Fellows will go on to teach English as full-time teachers in Bronx middle schools in the fall of 2012.
