Camping at the Presidio (CAP)

Program Associate

Part-time / Non-exempt

The CAP Program Associate is the primary support staff member working with BAWT's CAP Program Coordinator to deliver the CAP Program. CAP is a collaboration of partner agencies (the Crissy Field Center, the National Park Service, and the Presidio Trust). The CAP Program Associate will work under the direct supervision of the CAP Program Coordinator with the support and consult of the BAWT's Program Director.

Bay Area Wilderness Training (BAWT) is a project of the Earth Island Institute with headquarters offices are in downtown Oakland. The home desk for this position will be in the Presidio of San Francisco. Work-related travel includes occasional transportation to and from Oakland with more frequent trips to, from and around the Presidio.

Qualifications:

Essential

  • Demonstrated experience serving in a leadership role with diverse populations of adults and youth (age 5-24)
  • Experience with inventory and/or outdoor gear management
  • Excellent time management
  • Ability to oversee completion of projects and maintain long-term responsibilities
  • Ability to perform as the primary contact with trip leaders
  • A California driver's license, and a clean driving record
  • Basic computer skills, with knowledge of MS Office Applications and Gmail
  • Strong organization skills, neatness, attention to detail
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Openness to a flexible schedule (as needed) over a given 6 day period

Desirable

  • Demonstrated experience mentoring junior staff or interns
  • Background in education; outdoor education or curriculum design experience
  • Aptitude with database software and Google Docs
  • Wilderness First Aid certification
  • Significant experience with organizing group trips
  • Background in personal diplomacy or working in collaborative partnership settings
  • Graduation from BAWT's Wilderness Leadership Training, or willingness and ability to take the next upcoming WLT
  • A self-starter, self-motivated, independent individual
  • Fluency in Spanish, Mandarin, or Cantonese

Responsibilities:

Program Work

  • Function as the gear librarian for the Camping at the Presidio (CAP) Program with support and oversight from supervisor
  • Work with the CAP Coordinator in the preparation of courses, workshops, operational budget, and gear library
  • Track and schedule gear reservations in program calendar
  • Perform periodic equipment inspections and minor repairs
  • Routinely prepare and ship items in need of repair
  • Coordinate volunteer outreach, management and monthly events
  • Facilitate daily arrivals and departures of CAP groups. This includes but is not limited to; staging gear, describing equipment, orienting group to campsite, ensuring group leader is prepared and in rare cases, assisting with camp setup.
  • Meet daily program needs. This includes but is not limited to laundering sleeping gear, washing kitchen gear, replenishing firewood supply and tracking repairs
  • Drive electric vehicle to transport equipment to and from CAP's gear library / laundry facility to and from Rob Hill Campground

Administration and Client Support

  • Act as a support to CAP users (teachers and youth workers) by referring them to other BAWT resources that will help them gain new skills and plan more trips
  • Maintain an ongoing updated gear inventory
  • Educate BAWT trainees and CAP participants about the local environment, experiential education theory and practice, student management, risk management, navigation and gear care
  • Other projects as assigned
  • Work with constituency management systems to track users, volunteers, demographics and develop mail appeals
  • Maintain orderly and organized storage and work space at Rob Hill Campground and Kobbe St storage.

Outreach and Community Relations

  • Answer public inquiry about Rob Hill Campground and interpret public resources on a daily basis when working in the field
  • Represent BAWT to participants, public and the community of related organizations / individuals. In special cases, the CAP Program Coordinator could be asked to represent BAWT at conferences, workshops, special events including but not limited to LNT, tent and gear demonstrations
