WMMT FM/Appalshop is seeking a General Manager

WMMT's General Manager will lead the station in planning and overall direction -- preparing the annual plan and budget, supervising staff and tracking budget. S/he will be the keeper and advocate of WMMT's vision -- understanding both the guts and the soul of WMMT; articulating and advocating the station's mission locally and nationally; representing WMMT in state, regional, national discussions (especially media policy and fundraising); and leading WMMT's strategic planning and major policy decisions. The General Manager will take major responsibility for WMMT fundraising, especially with private foundations and with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Administration

  • As an Appalshop Project Director, responsible for preparing annual program plan and budget
  • Monitor budget, income and expenses; ensure annual audit is carried out
  • Oversee station operations
  • See that grant requirements are fulfilled and reports are timely

Government Relations

  • Corporation for Public Broadcasting reporting and relations. PTFP reporting and relations, and others as applicable.
  • Responsible for FCC compliance

Fundraising

  • Primary fundraiser for station operations.
  • Participate in Appalshop development efforts
  • Primary grant writer for WMMT
  • Responsible for major gifts campaigns with assistance from Development Director
  • Participate in on air fund drives along with staff

Community Relations

  • Primary spokesperson for WMMT in media and at public functions
  • Maintain communication and work with WMMT's Community Advisory Board for fundraising and special projects
  • Participate in producing Bluegrass Express Live with Bluegrass Express Live committee

Personnel responsibilities

  • General supervision of staff
  • Develop job descriptions; hire and train staff and contractors
  • Approve vacations, personal leave and compensatory time
  • Resolve grievances as needed or refer to Appalshop management

General responsibilities

  • Represent WMMT and articulate station's mission locally and nationally
  • Lead station strategic planning
  • Lead weekly staff meetings

Minimum Qualifications:
• A strong commitment to improve WMMT's financial well-being as well as its image and visibility throughout our broadcast region

• A passion for the value of a community-based radio station

• Expertise in revenue generation through fund-raising (foundation, individual, major gifts, etc.) and other revenue generating opportunities

• Experience in successful event planning and execution

• Good communication and interpersonal skills, combined with the ability to work with and motivate team members

• Excellent organizational skills

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and other standard office systems

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in public radio management

• A thorough knowledge of the operation of a radio station and be conversant with FCC rules and regulations

• Experience creating budgets and familiarity with other financial documents

• Bachelors degree or equivalent experience
