Structural Steel Coordinator – South of Embley

Project Overview
Bechtel is seeking a Structural Steel Coordinator to join our project office in the Brisbane CBD, working as part of an experienced and dedicated team of professionals. This current project involves a world scale greenfield mine development for one of the world’s premier mining companies. The remoteness of the site requires development of extensive infrastructure including; new access roads and river crossings to allow site access, development of an export wharf facility, site bulk earthworks, mine haul roads, water storage and tailings management areas, crushers, conveyors, beneficiation plant and stockpile facilities.
Role Overview
Reporting to the Structural Engineering Group Supervisor, this role will:
  • With the Structural Leads, plan work priorities of Structural Designers and Detailers to support their customers’ detailed requirements and the overall project schedule.
  • Liaise with Construction to determine Required-On-Site dates for all steel deliverables: steelwork, bolts, grating and handrail etc.
  • Liaise with Fabrication to determine IFF dates for all steel deliverables to fabricator.
  • Coordinate Material Requisition releases with Procurement to ensure all materials are available on time and at the right location.
  • With the Structural Leads, track progress of steel detail drawing deliverables, identify areas of concern and develop appropriate measures to ensure project schedule is met.
  • Facilitate coordination between structural and other disciplines to ensure structural designers have all necessary information and structural is providing other disciplines all their necessary design information.
  • Prepare regular reports for presentation to project management tracking steel design progress and steel quantities against the project estimate.
  • Liaise closely with the Structural Leads regarding work progress, resolution of conflicting priorities and team status.
  • Supporting the creation of a work environment that fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.
Basic Qualifications
  • Substantial experience in a similar role.
  • Knowledge of structural engineering techniques.
  • Knowledge of current computer applications for engineering and design.
  • Knowledge of the application of engineering to general constructability as applied to construction methods and materials.
  • Thorough understanding of the roles played by other engineering disciplines and other departments on project teams and a thorough understanding of basic construction practices and the economics involved.
  • Skills in Microsoft Office, and knowledge of Australian standards involving structural design.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience on EPCM Mining & Metals projects, preferably bauxite/alumina, would be highly advantageous
